Dogfish Head and Joan Jett drop a black lager to toast 45 years of rock

· Written by El pana Claudio

Dogfish Head teamed up with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts on Jett Black Lager, a limited-edition beer celebrating the 45th anniversary of two of the rocker's albums. For founder Sam Calagione it's a full-circle moment: Joan Jett was the first concert he ever went to. He says original music, rebellion and challenging the status quo line up with what Dogfish Head stands for.

The beer is jet black, but don't let that scare you: it's a light, crushable lager. It's brewed with barley malt, flaked maize and flaked rice, and the brewery describes aromas of honey, herbs and black pepper, a sweet breadcrust flavor with light toast, and a crisp, clean finish.

It's sold as a $45 kit, shipping included, through Give Them Beer: four 12 oz cans, a pin pack, a studded can cooler, a guitar-pick bottle opener and a collectible box. It's one kit per person, with the first drop on Tuesday, Oct. 27, and restocks on Nov. 3 and Nov. 10. The timing is meant to get it to you before Record Store Day Black Friday on Nov. 27, when the anniversary vinyl of "I Love Rock 'N' Roll" comes out.

What about us? Shipping is within the U.S. and in-person sales are at Dogfish's Delaware locations, so if you want a kit, double-check it ships to the island before you buy. Meanwhile, the takeaway for local brewers is clear: a dark lager doesn't have to be heavy, and in Puerto Rico's heat that's gold.
