Hefeweizen, Witbier or Weissbier? Wheat beers explained

· Written by Kevin Gonzalez Vazquez

They're all wheat beers, but they're not the same. Both use wheat; what changes is the yeast and the ingredients.

Hefeweizen (Germany): golden and hazy, tasting of ripe banana and clove, which come from the yeast. Perfect for a beach afternoon.

Witbier (Belgium): pale, almost white. Citrusy, spiced and light, thanks to orange peel and coriander seed. Great with seafood.

What about Weissbier? Decode the label: Weiss means "white" in German, another name for wheat beer. Hefe means "yeast": unfiltered, which is why it's hazy. Kristall is the same beer, filtered and clear. Dunkel is the dark version, with more malt.

So a Hefeweissbier is an unfiltered wheat beer.
