A nearly 200-year-old brewery releases a charity bitter… and it sells out in under 24 hours
· Written by El pana ClaudioT&R Theakston, the family brewery in Masham in northern England, has released Stand Fast for the Remembrance period, when the UK honors its service members. It's a classic 3.9% British bitter, and the brewery is donating 100% of the profit from every cask to the Armed Forces Benevolent Fund. The name comes from an old military phrase about holding your ground.
The project was led by Will Theakston, sales manager, sixth-generation family member and a former captain in the Queen's Royal Lancers. He's not the only one: several family members and staff have served or have close ties to the armed forces. And the response was huge: trade orders sold the beer out in under 24 hours.
The recipe uses ale and crystal malts, wheat and caramel, plus Challenger, Goldings and Target hops for fruit, spice and that classic bitterness. Theakston was founded in Masham in 1827, so next year it turns 200, and this is the first charity initiative tied to that milestone.
Why it matters: A small independent brewery doesn't need a giant campaign to do some good: a simple recipe, a cause the team truly connects with, and people show up. On an island where so many families have a veteran in them, it's an idea more than one Puerto Rican brewery could borrow.
